When the hard times of our lives make it hard to have hope, it helps to think we are not alone. Not only to think there are others who are in similar situations around the planet, but also people who have had their own lifetimes of troubles to live through, and beings who perhaps understand the often long, hard process of growing up strong in mind and spirit.
I don't trust any church or organization of good will like I once would have. It seems to me that too many of them focus on the life to come, and leave the present life to those who care about it just as much as the next life. Of course, another thing I've struggled with due to religious influences, is whether or not to believe in a next life, especially one in some form of spirit body that I already exist within, and can use whenever my physical body seems to fail me.
To be honest, even though I have lost a lot of respect for religious institutions and in many ways their teaching programs, I still find myself openly willing to confess that I believe Christ lived, died, and rose again. I'm not certain the written story is the full account, or the absolute truth, but I firmly believe there is a certain amount of truth behind most myths. Some are easier to believe than others though.
Despite my faith in Christ, I do not agree with a number of creeds which distinguish christians from others. In fact, more often than not, I would probably find myself on the side of the others. But I don't think anyone should have to take sides in any place for any reason. Humankind should have only one side to ally with, our side. If there are gods, goddesses, angels or aliens out there, then I hope they take our side as well, as we forge the future that our children will have to live in.
Which brings me to the point. Our children will have to live in a future we are currently designing and planning, from big governments planning big changes or little changes, to individual people making their own little plans. From non profit organizations trying to feed everyone, to church groups trying to save every soul that wanders the Earth in flesh and blood.
What I want for our children is for all of these groups and individuals to work for a better tomorrow. One that is more like the 'heaven' we dream about whisking off to when the rest of the world turns into a collection of mushroom clouds. I personally think that is the goal of those beings and spirits who help us in our daily lives. One by one, time after time, they do things to change us for the better, and that in turn slowly builds a better future.
I want people to be able to live without many of the cares and concerns I have, unless it becomes absolutely necessary that they get a spiritual 'slap in the face' to wake them up from self-involved daydreams about what would make their lives better. I also want everyone on earth to become more closely in tune with the Divine Presence that exists within each of us, and that permeates the universe all around us. I think that would be for the best.
One of the most important lessons I think we can take from the life of Christ is this: Each person is the Temple of God, not that building built by men. We should honor and cherish one another as one would honor and cherish another holy temple to the same God. As we grow more used to seeing God within each other, perhaps it will get easier to see God hiding in the trees, the fields of grass, the clouds in the sky (including that one that looks like a rabbit). I say let's do it, and if not for one another, then for our children. Life will still be full of pain, suffering, and death, but at least we can work together against it, as a single human body, perhaps even the Body of Christ.
